Travels with Peter & Kerry

Savai’i

We had our third trip to Samoa in January 2015 and again stayed at Le Lagoto Resort on Savai’i for the first week.

Savai’i is the largest island in Samoa and is actually the largest Polynesian island after Hawai’i and New Zealand. It is less populated than the main island, Upolu, with about one third of the nation’s population living there.

Savai’i is a volcanic island and it is still active, with the last eruption recorded from 1905 to 1911. This destroyed five villages and left a large part of the north east of the island desolate under a layer of black lava.

There is one main road that goes right around Savai’i, mostly near the coast but passing inland on the west and through the north eastern lava field. This passes many of the picturesque sights of Savai’i, including the Alofa’aga Blowholes on the south coast.
